The Crowds Haven’t Arrived Yet

One of the best-kept secrets about spring in Cumbria is how peaceful it is. The summer hordes are still a few months off, which means you can wander through the valley without jostling for space.

Spring is arguably the finest season for getting out and about in this part of the world. The fells are accessible again, the paths are quiet, and there’s that wonderful sense of the landscape waking up all around you.

Whether you fancy a gentle riverside stroll along the Eden Valley or something more ambitious in the Lake District National Park — just a short drive away — you’ll find no shortage of routes to suit every level of fitness.

History and Heritage Around Every Corner

Our little village of Temple Sowerby sits in the gorgeous Eden Valley, and the history here is something special.

Acorn Bank House, a National Trust property, is just around the corner and is particularly beautiful in spring when the famous walled garden bursts into colour. Lady Anne’s Way and the Eden Valley Church Trails are also wonderful ways to explore the area on foot or by bike.

And fancy a bit of literary history? On your trip you’d be walking in the footsteps of William Wordsworth and Samuel Coleridge. They set off on their famous exploration of the Lake District from The Kings Arms back in 1799. Not bad company to keep!
