A Beginner’s Guide to Fly Fishing

Fly fishing is a fun outdoor activity that combines the thrill of fishing with the beauty of nature. Learning about rivers, lakes and living things is fascinating, and it’s also a great way to take a break from the busy world we live in. (In fact, spending time in nature has been shown to help reduce stress in this study…)

At the King’s Arms in Temple Sowerby, we’re lucky to have our own section of the River Eden. And if you ask us, there’s no better way to spend a day out than to try out fly fishing in Cumbria, catching wild grayling and trout surrounded by the natural flora and fauna of the area.

So, if you’re looking for a gift for a fly fishing fanatic, or searching for a way to get out and enjoy some nature, why not purchase a day license with us?

And if you’re new to fly fishing, here are some helpful tips to get you started!

What is fly fishing?

Fly fishing is different from traditional fishing methods. It uses a lightweight lure called a fly, which mimics the insects fish feed on. The goal is to cast the fly delicately on the water’s surface to entice fish.

What do you need with you?

Check out our recommendations for some essential fly-fishing gear below.

  • License: Anyone fishing in England and Wales will need one of these. Day licences are available for purchase for Kings Arms guests at a discounted price of £10, and for £15 for non-guests. Click on the link on our website to get in touch about purchasing.
  • Fly rod: Choose a rod that matches the type of fish you want to catch. For beginners, a 9-foot rod with a 5-weight rating is versatile and suitable for various river conditions.
  • Fly reel: The reel holds the line and balances the rod. A simple, sturdy reel that matches your rod’s weight is perfect for beginners.
  • Fly line: This is the weighted line that helps cast the fly. Again, match it to your rod’s weight.
  • Flies: Start with a basic selection of dry flies, nymphs, and streamers to cover various fishing scenarios.
  • Some food: Don’t forget to bring your fuel for the day! You can order a packed lunch from the King’s Arms to take with you.

Casting basics

Practice the basic overhead cast in an open area before hitting the water. The basic overhead cast involves smooth, controlled movements to place the fly delicately to avoid scaring the fish (here’s a video!).

If you’d prefer an in-person lesson, get in touch with the King’s Arms to arrange a lesson, which is available for all levels.

Finding the right spot

Look for fish in areas with plenty of cover, like near rocks, under overhanging trees, or in deeper pools. Early morning and late afternoon are prime fishing times. If you’d like to venture a bit further than the River Eden, nearby Ullswater is the second biggest lake in Cumbria and has a variety of course and game fish.

Patience and observation

Patience is key. Observe the water for fish activity and match your fly to the insects you see. Adjust your technique based on the behaviour of the fish and water conditions.

Catch and release

Handle fish gently and release them quickly to ensure their survival. Wet your hands before touching the fish and use barbless hooks to minimise harm.

Final tips

  • Waders and boots: These will keep you dry and provide traction in the river.
  • Polarised sunglasses: This is key to reduce water glare and help you spot the fish!
  • Hat and suncream: Don’t forget about the sun…

Fly fishing is a journey of learning and connection with nature. Enjoy the process, and happy fishing!
